Elegant and stylish sugar flowers, on floral wedding cakes, are part of my signature style. As an award-winning cake designer, working with couples across Hampshire, Dorset and into London, I know my clients want exceptional quality. When sugar flowers are made by expert hands, they are the ultimate luxury in cake design and almost guarantee a stand-out display. Today I want to focus on one of my favourites to create – sugar magnolias.
Sugar Magnolias have the artistic quality of encapsulating different personalities and styles and are perfect for a stylish couple looking for a floral wedding cake that’s a bit different.
While roses or peonies can create a classic romance, sugar magnolias have a more statement feel that puts a contemporary spin on femininity. Full and blousy blooms are popular for their delightful detail, but magnolias are elegant and refined in an unexpected way – lending themselves to a slightly less conventional couple with exceptional taste.
A Magnolia flower (especially the pink variety) symbolises love, dignity, purity, and feminism. This, along with its simple yet bold appearance, means a magnolia suits modern couples looking for a refined romance and trend-led design.
When coming up with ideas for your floral wedding cake design, there are so many areas to take inspiration. Defining your overall wedding style can help clarify what feel you are looking for on your special day and help direct the details of your cake design.
Sugar magnolias suit a contemporary and elegant wedding style, with luxury quality and stylish details. They work equally well in simple, beautiful designs and statement, bold creations – either way adding a romantic touch with a difference.
Think natural, flowing bouquets; sophisticated colour palettes of pink, white, and green or grey; and venues such as the Italian Villa in Dorset and the five-star Relais & Chateaux Chewton Glen in Hampshire.
One of my favourite designs to date, I adore the grey and pink colour pairing on this cake. The design was inspired by a stationery suite and almost feels like a romantic letter, written for a lover, in cake form.
The concept has a timeless air about it, whilst remaining contemporary and stylish – and of course the big and bold sugar magnolias ensure the cake has that luxury quality I’ve become known for.
A peach and gold delight. Sometimes a simple design creates the most beautiful impact.
With flawless clean lines (the sharp edges of the cake must look impeccable when there isn’t as much detail to focus on), the palest of peach tones, and an elegant and delicate silk ribbon – this wedding cake feels feminine and refined. The sugar magnolias, with statement gold centres, leaves, and twigs, add that unexpected interest without losing the overall romance of the design.
Though this particular cake was made for a celebration instead of a wedding, it shows how beautifully sophisticated sugar magnolias can look on a single tiered, individual cake.
Imagine a tiered focal cake with elegant lines, a soft and romantic colour palette, and statement magnolias – with individual cakes scattered around the dessert table, each with their own sugar magnolia, alongside delicious treats such as macarons and decorated biscuits. A mouth-watering and stand out display with a touch of unique femininity.
Have you fallen in love with sugar magnolias as much as me? Would you like to talk about your very own floral wedding cake? If so – get in touch for a chat.
