Five Tips for Styling an Elegant and Contemporary Dessert Table

Wedding dessert tables have become a popular trend in recent years, and I can understand why. They are a wonderful way to offer your guests an array of mouth-watering delights, including all the desserts you adore and a tiered wedding cake if you wish. Follow my five tips below and you will be well on your way to styling an elegant and contemporary dessert table.

1. Consistent Colour Palette

I’m not one to shy away from modern colour palettes, especially in cake design, however my first tip for styling an elegant and contemporary dessert table is to keep the colours consistent.

Whether you are opting for a luxury and stylish palette such as purple, green, and gold, or choosing classic and elegant pastel shades – keeping the colours consistent across the dessert table elements will provide the quality feel you are looking for.

2.  Shapes & Texture

I cannot emphasise enough how important shape and texture are in creating a flawless dessert table. In fact, they are two of the most important details in my cake displays and part of my signature style.

Using interesting shapes and textures can be the difference between a mediocre experience and stand out display. From round tiered cakes to white chocolate pyramids, and from blousy sugar flowers to clean lined serving-ware. Exceptional use of shape and texture will make your wedding dessert table look decadent and expertly styled.

3.  Creative Serving

Gone are the days of all wedding cakes having to sit heavily on bulky, brick-like, cake stands. Contemporary displays can consist of elegant stands that resemble glass or gold, and creative vessels like milk bottles and confectionery jars can play host to a variety of delicious desserts.

Take inspiration from your overall wedding concept wherever possible, using serving-ware that enhances the look and feel you are aiming for. Classic silver platters and sophisticated glass ramekins partner perfectly with an elegant affair, whereas textured bowls and metallic stands are stylish elements befitting a more modern day. Your guests will appreciate the time and effort you take to hand-pick the right pieces.

4. Variety of Heights

One of the advantages of choosing a professional cake designer to create your dessert table is they can create an exceptional, showstopper, tiered wedding cake to be the focus of your display. A tiered cake is not always essential with a wedding dessert table but with the right expertise it can, quite literally, take things to another level of quality.

I love to include a variety of heights in my dessert table displays, allowing the eye to move around and be drawn from one delicious item to the next. Interesting serving-ware is a key aid in providing height, but more important is your choice of mouth-watering desserts. Choose a well-considered selection from iced biscuits to cookie pops, and delightful individual cakes to elegant tiered creations. Your guests won’t know where to start first!

5. Flowers

Sugar flowers are my ultimate passion. They take years to master and I’m very proud my creations have led to me becoming an award-winning cake designer. You can read my post on whether you should use sugar flowers or fresh flowers on your wedding cake here. Complimenting your sugar flowered cakes with fresh floral displays on your dessert table, creates a flawless and cohesive concept.

Sometimes your dream flowers aren’t in season for your wedding date, but sugar flowers are never out. Using your favourite blooms as inspiration within your cake and dessert designs and complimenting the overall display with simple and fresh foliage, or florals in the same palette, will add that finishing touch.
